Police said three women were shot dead with a rifle in front of a restaurant in the small Finnish town of Imatra around midnight.

Victim Tiina Wilen-Jappinen was chairwoman of Imatra City Council and represented the social democratic party.

Police said the other two victims are journalists.

A suspect, a 23-year-old local man with a criminal record was arrested at the scene, the Southeastern Finland Police Department said in a statement.

The three women were leaving the Vuoksenvahti restaurant when they were gunned down.

Detective Inspector Saku Tielinen said: “At the moment, it looks like the victims were chosen at random.”
