The controversial vote on government-backed constitutional reform will take place on Sunday and, if polls are correct, will see defeat for Prime Minister Matteo Renzi.
The No camp are currently 11 percentage points ahead with just days to go.
Such a result would see the humiliated Mr Renzi, a supporter of the European Union, forced to leave office and could pave the way for an anti-EU rival.
Defeat would be the third such snub to anti-establishment in a major western country this year following Brexit and the election of Donald Trump as US president.
Armed with iron bars and baseball bats, protestors yesterday were met by rows of riot police in the Piazza Repubblica.
