Tensions between the West and Russia have escalated in recent months following Putin’s support for Syrian tyrant Bashar al-Assad and the invasion and annexation of Crimea.
German foreign minister, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, said: “Europe’s security is in danger. As difficult as ties to Russia may currently be, we need more dialogue, not less.”
Steinmeier, a presidential candidate for the Social Democrats, first pushed for an arms control deal with Russia in the summer to avoid tensions bubbling over between Russia and the West and has urged other nations to sign-up the cause.
He added: “We have a responsibility to leave no stone unturned in our effort to increase security and peace.”
The US and Nato officials have claimed the deal could been seen as “sabre-rattling and shrill war cries” from the West which could worsen relations with the Kremlin.
