Perhaps once a decade something happens that really changes things: Margaret Thatcher’s election in 1979, the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, or 9/11 in 2001.

But this year alone has already seen two epochal events that it’s already safe to say will change the world.

In June the Brexit vote did not just turn British politics upside down. As we will see over the next months, years and even decades, it will also transform Europe.

Donald Trump’s victory is clearly another such seismic change. You don’t need me to repeat the endless analyses of why he won.

But although our nations are very different, the two votes have something hugely important in common and it’s a linking thread that is deeply significant for the future.

One analyst described the Brexit vote and Mr Trump’s win as voters sticking two fingers up to the establishment.
