The tropical storm has already wreaked havoc on the Caribbean, leaving 10 people feared dead in Cuba and thousands homeless, and is set to hit Florida later this week.

The state governor has already taken steps to activate the National Guard as he prepares for a “direct hit” on his state, and he has now furthered his chilling warning, insisting that people simply must flee to save themselves.

Speaking starkly at a press conference, Scott said: “If Matthew directly impacts Florida there will be massive destruction that we haven’t seen in years. Once the storm comes we cannot put our first responders in harm’s way.

‘You must leave before it’s too late. You can rebuild a home, rebuild a business, you cannot rebuild a life.”

Scott’s South Carolina counterpart Nikki Haley has announced school closures and evacuations of over 1 million people ahead of the storm hitting.

And fellow meteorological experts have recommended that Florida be evacuated as soon as possible, as the category three storm prepares to hit.

Liz Bentley, chief executive of the Meteorological Society, expects winds of 130mph to work their way up from Florida, towards South Carolina, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.
