Mr Farage called on the party faithful at the Ukip annual conference in Bournemouth to continue to push hard and force the Government to respect the full implications of the results of the EU referendum and accept no compromise.

He took a sideswipe at Theresa May’s apparent softening on her initial “Brexit means Brexit” stance and said: “The new Prime Minister looked to be sure footed when she first started but I have the feeling things are beginning to change.

“She said British people voted in the referendum for ‘some control’ when they voted.

“No prime minister – we voted to take back control of our borders.”

Predicting a “great political battle ahead” over releasing Britain from the EU, Mr Farage pointed out how half of Mrs May’s Cabinet supported Remain.

Mr Farage said Ukip needed to be “strong” to push the Government into delivering what 17.5million people voted for at the EU referendum.

He warned if “Brexit doesn’t mean Brexit” then Ukip could scoop up disgruntled Tory voters as well as those it is targeting in Labour’s heartlands.

And in his farewell speech as Ukip leader, the Brexit champion today set three tests for the Prime Minister.
