EUROPEAN security services are bracing for a new wave of jihadis returning home from the battlefields of Iraq and Syria as Islamic State (ISIS) loses its grip on the Middle East.

Thousands of Western Islamists are believed to have joined the fanatical regime in the last two years, swelling ISIS’ ranks and allowing the group to conquer vast swathes of territory.

But the terrorists are now fast losing ground after sustained aerial campaigns led by the US and Russia and ground assaults by rebel groups and government-backed armies.

The turning tide has heralded the beginning of the end of the barbaric self-styled ‘Caliphate’ – but the problem has been replaced by an equally worrying issue with the prospect of terrorist fighters returning home.

Security chiefs fear thousands could swamp Europe in the coming months, raising the risk of a new spate of terror attacks on home soil.

A senior British security official said: “ISIS will face big losses over the next year. Some of the foreign fighters will killed, some captured, but the others will try to flee, many back to Europe.

“It’s a real witch’s brew, quite a big problem – one which will not go away.”

He warned another aspect that needed addressing was the risk posed by child fighters with ISIS, who are also known as Daesh.
