Several shops and a mall were evacuated after being rocked by the earthquake, which struck the southern-most tip of Spain.
Alicia Macias, a resident of Los Barrios, where the Bay Plaza Shopping Centre was evacuated, said: “I was in the yard feeding my children and I heard the gate and the wall move. It was fast, but pretty obvious.”
José Ignacio Landaluce, mayor of Algeciras, said: “We are alert in case of an aftershock.”
In the municipality of San Roque, the most sensitive areas were Miraflores and Taraguilla.
Local Police and Civil Guard are still there.
Dolores Marchena, the second deputy mayor of San Roque, said: “In Miraflores and Taraguilla there are tall buildings, so they felt it more.
“We are listening to neighbours, but the measures so far are only preventive.”
José Antonio Gómez, town security councillor of Los Barrios, said: “We evacuated the shopping centre gradually and only as a precaution. Other shops in the area didn’t because it wasn’t necessary,”.
