Researchers have discovered America’s first untreatable strain of E. Coli bacteria.

The unique new superbug has mobile genes that make it resistant to two types of antibiotics, which are now considered last-line defenses against life-threatening bacteria.

It was discovered in a 76-year-old man who was treated in 2014 for a complicated urinary tract infection.

Scientists have spent months analyzing the patient’s blood and urine samples to understand why his infection was so challenging to treat.
