Huge crowds gathered in Oxford Street and Brixton to hold banners and chant slogans, following the brutal killings of Philando Castile and Alton Sterling – who were both shot by police officers in the USA last week at point blank range.

The demonstration began in Oxford Street at 10am on Sunday, where they crowd chanted “hands up, don’t shoot”, “no racist police” and “black lives matter”. Some carried signs reading “How Many More?” and “Don’t Shoot”, in protest of the police killings of dozens of black Americans in recent years.

The crowd also took part in a sit-down protest in the busy shopping street, while organisers climbed onto a bus stop to deliver passionate speeches. Many held their fists in the air, recreating the iconic black pride salute by Tommie Smith and John Carlos on the podium at the 1968 Summer Olympics.
