The synagogue dates back to the height of the Roman Empire and the mosaics have now been removed from the site, in the ancient Israel village of Huqqaq, for conservation.
The unearthed mosaics show an ark and pairs of animals, including elephants, leopards, donkeys, snakes, bears, lions, ostriches, camels, sheep and goats.
Jodi Magness, director of the excavations and professor in the University of North Carolina, said: “These scenes are very rare in ancient synagogues.”
The mosaic’s prominent Bible scenes were found during annual excavations when the panels were found in the late synagogue.
