Members of Congress said on Twitter the security alert took place around 2pm BST after an incident in the Rayburn Building.

One US congressman said a female congressional staffer was seen with a firearm while an aide said the suspect was seen hiding in the basement.

In the aftermath authorities confirmed they were looking for someone.

One Capitol Police officer said an “event” was under way – and no one was permitted to enter or leave.

People were advised to take shelter in their offices with locked doors and windows and keep their phones on silent.

US journalist Katherine Scott, who was caught up in the lockdowon, tweeted: “We’re currently locked in the House chamber.

“Overheard a Capitol police officer say a woman entered Rayburn with a gun.”

After almost an hour of being placed on lockdown the US Capitol was given the all clear around 2.45pm BST.

It is unclear currently if anyone was arrested.
