In a speech in Westminster this morning the long-time anti-Brussels announced his resignation from the head of his party following the country’s historic Brexit vote in the EU referendum.

Highlighting the toll of leading Ukip on himself and his family, Mr Farage said: “I now feel I have done my bit. I couldn’t possibly achieve more than we managed to get in that referendum.

“I feel it’s right that I should now stand aside as leader of Ukip. I will continue to support the party and the leader.”

Mr Farage added he would watch the negotiations over Britain’s exit from the EU “like a hawk” in his role as a leading MEP in the European Parliament.

He also revealed he would lend his help to other eurosceptic groups across Europe wanting their own countries to quit the EU.

He said: “I’m very keen to help the independence movements in other parts of the European Union because you haven’t seen the last country to leave the EU.

“It has been a huge chunk of my life doing this and it isn’t easy to let it go but it does come at a cost to me and perhaps those around me.

“During the referendum campaign I said I want my country back. What I am saying now is ‘I want my life back’, and it starts today.”

Mr Farage will be replaced as Ukip leader in time for the party’s conference in September, with fellow MEPs Steven Woolfe, Paul Nuttall and Diane James among the frontrunners for the role.

Ukip’s national executive committee will meet this afternoon to finalise arrangements for the leadership contest.
