Top financial institutions have vowed to prove Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne wrong and keep London one of the world’s top financial centres.
However, regional politicians in France and Germany say they want to exploit the Leave vote and get more companies to be based in their cities.
In Germany, Bavarian finance minister Markus Soeder said he wanted to make Munich a business base to compete with Germany’s financial capital, Frankfurt.
While in France, president of the Paris region Valerie Peeress said she was willing to fork out the cash to get more businesses to the French capital.
However, they could well find themselves disappointed.
Barclays Bank chief executive Jes Staley said that his bank was “staying anchored in Great Britain” and not moving anyone to Europe.
He said: “Right now we are not making any plans to pick up and move people from one location to another.
“You might have to increase your presence in another location – that doesn’t necessarily mean you have to decrease [at] your location here.”
