Two gunmen carried out the attack at the open-air Sarona Market, which is popular with tourists.

Both shooters have now been arrested after fleeing into nearby streets and police said they are looking for no other suspects. Police said the gunmen came from a village near the Palestinian city of Hebron in the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

At least three people have died and several more have been hurt. Four are being operated on in Ichilov Hospital – alongside one of the shooters who was injured as he was detained.

Earlier reports indicated a four-year-old girl was tragically killed in the shooting but those claims have now been disputed.

Heavily armed police are now searching the area for any possible accomplices. Footage has emerged of a policeman opening fire on a person believed to be a gunman.

The incident occurred in an area of trendy cafes and restaurants very close to the central military headquarters and Defence Ministry compound.

The shooters were initially described by witnesses as being dressed as ‘ultra-Orthodox Jews’ – but this was unconfirmed.

Police said the gunmen came from a village near the Palestinian city of Hebron in the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

CCTV footage shows diners in a restaurant in the market fleeing when the shooting begins, crowding around a doorway before making it to safety.

One witness said: ”I was with the family, eating pizza. We heard the shots, we didn’t know what was happening, and everybody got down on the floor. We managed to escape to a cellar.”
