In the midst of the outbreak, the WHO has set up an International Health Regulations Emergency Committee to examine the Zika virus and will meet on Monday to decide whether it constitutes a global emergency on the scale of Ebola.

The virus has rapidly spread to 23 countries and health experts worry that the weather could make the potential outbreak even worse.

In the past week British and Danish travellers have been diagnosed with the virus that can cause fever, joint pain and a rash.

The biggest concern coming from the outbreak is the possible link between Zika and thousands of babies being born with underdeveloped brains in Brazil.

As such, women in Britain have been warned by Public Health England (PHE) to consider avoiding travel to areas where Zika is active.

In a briefing to the WHO’s executive board, WHO director-general Margaret Chan said the organisation was “deeply concerned”.

She said the virus was “spreading explosively” through the Americas and “the level of alarm is extremely high”.
