Despite the hype that it would foster immense change, the recent Paris climate talks – known as COP21 – turned out to be more of an eye-rolling disappointment than anything else. Even James Hansen, considered to be the father of climate change and global awareness on the topic, said the gathering of 200 nations was ludicrous.(1,2)
Of the Paris climate talks, Hansen says, “It’s just bullshit for them to say: ‘We’ll have a 2C warming target and then try to do a little better every five years.’ It’s just worthless words. There is no action, just promises. As long as fossil fuels appear to be the cheapest fuels out there, they will be continued to be burned.”(2)
Indeed, that’s exactly what transpired at COP21. After all the so-called excitement that the summit promised, it ultimately resulted in the conclusion that it would makes sense to put a limit on average global warming to 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit) above pre-industrial temperatures. To that end, each country is supposed to put together a plan to explain how they will strive to achieve this. Then, starting in 2018, they must develop a new plan every five years.(3)
