Recruitment for the Islamic State group is thriving in Minnesota.

Abdirizak Mohamed Warsame, 20, is now the 10th man officials in the Twin Cities have charged with planning to join the Islamic State group. The security guard was arrested Wednesday and ordered held pending a detention hearing Dec. 15.

“Abdirizak Warsame conspired with others to travel to Syria to fight with ISIL,” said Assistant Attorney General John Carlin on Thursday, MPR News reported. “We will continue to work to stem the flow of foreign fighters abroad and to bring to justice those who seek to provide material support to designated foreign terrorist organizations.”

The Eagan resident, who will be assigned a public defender, is linked to nine others currently facing terrorism charges. Another man, Abdi Nur, allegedly made it to Syria before he could be apprehended.

In March of this year, however, Warsame was interviewed by the New York Times and said he “had no clue” as to the motives behind Nur’s disappearance.

“It went out like wildfire that he had left and nobody knew where he had gone,” Warsame told the newspaper March 21.

Prosecutors say that not only did Warsame know what was going on, but he once was considered the leader of his group of Somali friends attempting to join ISIS. Court filings allege he was interested in traveling to Syria as early as 2014, but was denied a passport due to “insufficient supporting documentation.”
