THE former head of the British army has issued the starkest warning yet that Britain could be embroiled in a ground war in Syria if airstrikes fail to defeat Islamic State.

Lord Dannatt, who served as the General Chief of Staff during the Iraq War, said the UK may be faced with the “unpalatable option of deploying western combat units on the ground at some point in future”.

His comments were echoed by former foreign secretary William Hague, now a lord, who said “small specialist ground forces” could be deployed to defeat the terror network, known as ISIS or Daesh.

Lord Hague added that airstrikes should not rule out Western troops “if that helps to tip the balance on the ground”.

Yesterday’s motion said no “combat forces” would join the fight in Syria at this stage, however, troops could help train moderate Syrian fighters.

The United States has also stressed the importance of ground forces, saying the militant group would not be defeated by airstrikes alone, but insisted boots on the ground had to be Syrian or Arab.

US Secretary of State John Kerry said: “I think we know that without the ability to find some ground forces that are prepared to take on Daesh, this will not be won completely from the air.”

Mr Kerry was speaking hours after Britain launched bombing raids against Islamic State targets in Syria, joining forces with France and the US.
