Australia confirmed the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) was “compromised” in a major attack, as China ramps up its alleged cyber-warfare.
Australia’s military and commercial aircraft rely on the bureau’s weather predictions to plan out safe routes when travelling.
The bureau also provides information to shipping companies, water supply safety and also works closely with the Department of Defence.
The weather office also owns one of Australia’s largest supercomputers.
According to officials, there was “little doubt” China was to blame.
They admitted that this hack was “massive” compared to other cyber attacks in the past.
Without proper forecasting ability, planes are often “flying blind”.
