Republican Eric Ciotti blasted the French government’s handling of riots which broke out in the shanty town among migrants desperate to cross the border into England.

Mr Ciotti said Calais had descended into such chaos “guerrilla warfare” was spreading the trouble-hit port town.

The Frenchman also called for demolishment of the migrant camp, which houses more than 6,000 people.

He said: “The risk is now that of guerrilla warfare gradually infiltrating this lawless slum, directly exposing the police who are forced to control a mass of people who dream of reaching England.”

The comments came after the Mayor of Calais called for the army to be brought in to patrol the French port town.

Mr Ciotti said: “In light of this constant unrest, I denounce the Government’s decision to stop imposing state authority in an illegal settlement zone for migrants”.

He proposed reverting France’s current policy on the situation in Calais, saying the authorities should “break up the migrants” without worrying about “the humanitarian or security consequences”.

The French government should act as though “doing away with Calais would erase the existence of these people”, Mr Ciotti wrote in a press release.
