The coldest air mass of the season chilled temperatures across the US and dumped some snow on parts of the Midwest and New England on Saturday – and that could just be the beginning.

The cold front dropped temperatures into the 30s and below in some areas, including in Marquette, Michigan, where thermometers measured 27 degrees and about 2.5 inches of snow fell overnight.

The last time the city had two inches or more in October was in 2001 and the output was its highest daily total this early in the season since October 17, 1976, the National Weather Service reported.
