University rips up chapel pews to accommodate Muslims

A “predominantly Judeo-Christian environment” on Wichita State University’s campus was deemed not inclusive enough for Muslim students last May. The solution: Rip up an alter and pews and make space for prayer rugs.
Donor Harvey D. Grace stipulated to the Wichita, Kansas, school its Grace Chapel must be open to all faiths. Although the building was open to all faiths, that wasn’t good enough for the student government association.
“Why did they have to take out all the pews,” alum Jean Ann Cusick wrote on Facebook, Fox News reported Thursday.
“I would also like to know where the cross has gone. This wreaks of political correctness,” added Robie Taylor.
WSU President John Bardo said in a statement on the school’s Facebook page Tuesday, “Our goal should be exactly what Mrs. Grace set out to do in her gift, to have an all faiths chapel that is welcoming to all religious groups on campus.”
