Nurses in California plan walk outs and strikes to protest the lack of sufficient protection and protocols against Ebola in corporate hospitals.

“Nurses, who have been willing to stand by the patients whether it’s the flu, whether it’s Ebola, whether it’s cancer, now they’re being asked to put themselves in harm’s way unprotected, unguarded,” Rose Ann DeMoro, executive director of National Nurses United in Oakland, told Reuters.

In addition to protests next month, nurses across the nation will stage bake sales to pay for hazmat suits not provided by corporate hospitals.

After two nurses were infected with Ebola in Dallas, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta issued new guidelines and recommendations for dealing with Ebola, including the use of protective gear including full-body suits.

Advocates say recommendations should standardized and mandatory in all hospitals.

The National Nurses United and the California Nurses Association have sent a petition to Obama calling for a national standard in the treatment of Ebola patients.

“We want something where a virus cannot penetrate anywhere from head to toe in the nurse’s body,” said DeMoro.
