The term scuba diving comes from the acronym “SCUBA” which stands for Self-Controlled Underwater Breathing Apparatus. One of the principal dangers for those who like this activity is known as “the bends”. The primary cause of the bends, or decompression sickness by another description, is too rapid ascent by the diver causing gas bubbles to form inside the body. The bubbles are formed from inert gasses diffused in the diver’s blood stream from using the scuba apparatus. Untreated, the bends are both painful and often fatal….
