Health officials: 8 H1N1 deaths in Washoe County

Reno, NV (KRNV & MyNews4.com) –Flu season is far from over here in Northern Nevada. According to the Centers for Disease Control, reports of hospitalizations due to one particular strain of flue, H1N1, are rising, especially amount otherwise young healthy adults.
Right now public health officials are doing everything can to help prevent the spread of the flu here in Northern Nevada, and prevention is key as flu fatalities are on the rise.
“We’ve been really lucky so far but I don’t want to test fate any more I think that this flu season has been exceptionally bad so I think that it’s really important that I get her in and get her a flu shot.”
Julie Hill brought her daughter Erika, a middle school student from who resides in Cold Springs, to the Community Flue Vaccine clinic at the cold springs family center, in hopes of preventing the spread of what has been a rather aggressive strain of flu this year, H1N1.
Erika says the flu shot it was rather painless, “It’s not a big deal, it hurts for a sec, but not very long, but you don’t get sick.”
People of all ages lined up to get their flu shot this evening, in the wake of the 2009 flu pandemic that claimed 38 lives in Nevada. County health officials are warning that this year’s flu season is far from over.
Washoe County has seen an increase in H1N1 cases and more and more hospitalizations compared to years past. According to Randall Todd Director of Epidemiology here in Washoe County, “Every year we have certain strains of flu that circulate and often one strain in particular dominates. This year, both in Washoe County and throughout out the nation it has been H1N1.”
