A Santa Rosa County paramedic is dead and his wife is in emergency care because of complications from the H1N1 virus.

Rodney Gajewski, 47, a Lifeguard Ambulance paramedic from Gulf Breeze passed away Sunday after contracting the flu, leaving family, friends and coworkers shocked and saddened.

“He was the big brother every guy wanted to have,” his brother Jay Gajewski said. “He was a great dad, and he was loved in his community.”

Jay Gajewski, who lives in Michigan, said he hadn’t known his brother was sick, and that he was shocked by how quickly the situation deteriorated.

“The last text I got from just said he and his wife were in the hospital,” he said.
Rodney Gajewski’s wife Kelly is still undergoing treatment at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
