GENESEE COUNTY, MI – Genesee County emergency rooms were at capacity over the holidays in large part because of people with flu-like symptoms.
Flu season is beginning in Genesee County and across the state. The county has seen an uptick in flu cases, including the H1N1 strain, said Mark Valacak, Genesee County Health Department health officer.
“We’re definitely seeing a lot of the type A H1N1. That seems to be a nationwide trend,” Valacak said. “It’s the strain that was identified back in 2009. It’s the strain that’s found in the vaccine. The vaccine should provide good protection.”
An increase of flu cases is not uncommon for this time of the year. Flu season usually lasts until the end of January or early February, Valacak said. Where there may be some concerns about H1N1 because of the pandemic in 2009, there shouldn’t be that issue this time around, Valacak said.
