Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen on Wednesday blamed opponents of President Donald Trump’s immigration policies and the migrants themselves for the deaths of two children who crossed the border this month.
Democrats who are set to take control of the House of Representatives in the New Year are demanding an investigation into the deaths, which have sparked outrage.
‘Our system has been pushed to a breaking point by those who seek open borders,’ Nielsen said in a statement on Wednesday.
‘Smugglers, traffickers, and their own parents put these minors at risk by embarking on the dangerous and arduous journey north.’
