Devastating aerial footage has laid bare the extent of Hurricane Michael’s wrath in Florida’s panhandle, with entire beach communities wiped out by the historic storm.

Mexico Beach, a small town with around 1,000 residents, took the brunt of the monster hurricane on Wednesday afternoon and is now barely recognizable.

The storm also caused ‘catastrophic’ damage to Tyndall Air Force Base which sits between Panama City and Mexico Beach.

More than 1million people are without power and at least 12 people have been killed across four different states.

As Michael moves away from land, now downgraded from a hurricane to a tropical storm, emergency workers have switched gears from emergency to recovery mode.

They are now working on finding anyone who may have been swept away by the floods and putting those who survived the terrifying storm back in their homes.

It will be many weeks before power is restored to some areas and the full cost of the damage is unknown.

Among those killed was an 11-year-old girl who was hit in the head when a car port next door to her grandparents house came crashing down onto it, hitting her in the head and also injuring her grandmother.

A fire fighter in Virginia lost his life when another vehicle lost control on the highway and crashed into his engine.

In Florida, a 44-year-old man died in his wife’s lap when they were both crushed by a falling oak tree.
