Police shot and killed a gunman who opened fire outside a crowded courtroom in Pennsylvania on Wednesday, injuring four people.
Officers said the man entered the lobby of District Judge Daniel Shimshock’s office carrying a handgun in the afternoon and began shooting.
Police Sgt. R. Scott Miller was the first to encounter the gunman and was injured during an exchange of gunfire before taking cover, the local district attorney said.
The gunman, who has not been named, then shot and wounded two men, aged 47 and 35, and a 39-year-old woman.
A second police officer, who has also not been named, then exchanged fire with the gunman and shot him dead.
The man had been due in court that day on domestic violence charges of strangulation, aggravated assault, terroristic threats and simple assault.
A protective order had been issued against the gunman, police said, though it is not clear if any of his victims were related to the previous incident.
‘In this case, as is so often the case, the German Township police officer ran toward the danger, not away. He protected over 30 to 40 people from injury or death,’ Fayette County District Attorney Richard Bower said.
‘These police officers and these emergency management people risk their lives every day … and today they all were a shining light to our community.’
