The attackers launched the shocking catapult bombardment on the Masjid Qamarul Islam and Al Hijrah Masjid mosques, both in Small Heath, within an hour on Wednesday night.

Windows of the Masjid Qamarul Islam mosque, on Fosbrooke Road, were smashed by ball-bearings during evening prayers at around 10pm.

Al-Hijrah mosque on Hob Moor Road was targeted around 20 minutes later in a similar attack.

West Midlands Police (WMP) deployed officers with firearms to both mosques to patrol the area and reassure worshippers and residents.

Officers recovered ball-bearings at both places of worship thought to have been fired from a heavy-duty catapult.

The motivation behind the catapult attack is yet to be established by WMP and investigations are ongoing.

But the catapult attack happened just 24 hours after Birmingham resident Salih Khater, 29, was arrested on suspicion of bringing terrorism to Westminster.

The 29-year-old, who lived in Sparkhill, Birmingham, is accused of driving a silver Ford Fiesta through crowds of pedestrians and cyclists before crashing into a security barrier outside the Houses of Parliament.

Scotland Yard’s counter-terror team, which is leading the investigation, is treating the incident as a “deliberate attack” given the method and “iconic” location.
