A 5.3 magnitude earthquake has been reported off the coast of California, 85 miles west of Los Angeles.
It struck the region at 10.30am on Thursday and was most felt by the Channel Islands.
There is no danger of a tsunami, according to the National Weather Service in Los Angeles.
Residents reported feeling it on the ground but it is not yet known what the extent of the damage was.
Among those who tweeted about it from mainland was Chrissy Teigen who, like many, were unsure if it had actually happened.
‘Earthquake?’ she tweeted. Anna Kendrick was more familiar.
She wrote: ‘Ah, the old “seasick” style earthquake. I’m gonna be dizzy the rest of the day.’
Others told how it ‘kept rolling’ but few were alarmed by the disruption.
‘We were sitting here, going, ok, earthquake…waiting for a quick jolt…then it kept rolling…and then we were saying…OMG STOP!!’ said one Twitter user.
One person said they felt their ‘shelves move back and forth’ but no serious damage has yet been reported.
