The USS Carl Vinson, a US Navy Nimitz-class supercarrier, embarked on its mission last week alongside a fleet of warships and guided-missile destroyers.
The Vinson is scheduled to make port near the Korean Peninsula ahead of the Winter Olympic Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea on February 9.
In rare diplomatic talks centred around the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics officials from North and South Korea are to meet this week.
The talks will focus on the prospect of Pyongyang taking part in the Games and ways to “ease military tensions”, Cho Myung-gyon, South Korea’s unification minister, said.
Despite US President Donald Trump supporting the talks, the US Navy has deployed the Vincent in a move that could enrage North Korea’s supreme leader, Kim Jong-un.
In a statement, the US Navy said: “The deployment marks the second time the Carl Vinson Strike Group will operate throughout the Indo-Pacific region under US 3rd Fleet’s command and control.
“The strike group became the first in recent history to demonstrate the command and control construct called 3rd Fleet Forward when units completed a six-month deployment last year.”
The Vinson, which set sail from San Diego last week, was sent as part of a “regularly scheduled deployment”, according to the US navy.
