Relations between Mr Trump and his counterparts in South Korea and Japan have been strained over recent weeks, after he attacked the allies for failing to take a tough stance on Kim Jong Un’s tyrannical regime.

Yet the US president also announced he was would up the amount of military hardware in the region in a bid to deter Pyongyang.

He tweeted: “I am allowing Japan & South Korea to buy a substantially increased amount of highly sophisticated military equipment from the United States.”

But the show of allied strength has been blasted by North Korea state media, who condemned Donald Trump of aggravating the situation on the peninsula.

An article in newspaper Minju Joson criticised the president’s behaviour, saying it clearly proves that Mr Trump has neither the will nor ability to defuse tension on the Korean peninsula.

The paper went on to say that he has “only merchant-like calculation” to use the aggravated situation as a golden opportunity for making money.

The commentary said: “In light of the fact that the sales record of the munitions is in directional proportion of the mounting tension, it is clear what Trump does want.

“He has loudly vociferated about ‘threats’ from the DPRK in a bid to create conditions favourable for the sale of huge amount of weapons, getting zealous in escalating tension.
