Ian Hopkins, Chief Constable of Greater Manchester Police, said several items of significant interest have already been discovered but searches remain ongoing until the entire network of depraved terrorists is unearthed.

He said: “It’s been an extremely challenging week. There are eight people in custody aged between 18-38.

“Officers are still searching 12 locations across Greater Manchester and a cordon remains in place around Manchester Arena.”

“We have hundreds of officers working on this investigation and have seized thousands of exhibits. There has been enormous progress with the investigation but there is still a lot of work to do.”

He sought to reassure the people of Manchester that they would be safe this weekend with several major events scheduled to take place.

Chief Constable Hopkins said: “Manchester is a busy place and over the weekend we have some large events taking place this weekend with the Great Manchester Run, the Manchester Games and Courteeners concert at Old Trafford cricket ground. It is also the start of Ramadan.

“All of these events will be taking place and a significant number of armed officers will continue to patrol communities in Greater Manchester.
