On the same day the EU celebrated 60 years of the Union, hundreds of supporters holding “Frexit” and “Europe dictatorship” placards gathered at a rally for eurosceptic Popular Republican Union (UPR) party leader Francois Asselineau.

Speaking at the the Paris Event Centre, La Villette gate, he said: “If it is not me elected on May 7 you will have the programme of the European Commission.”

He claimed all the other presidential candidates intend to remain within the European Union and it would be “months and years lost” for Eurosceptics.

Mr Asselineau added: “We have a candidate who proposes to use the Frexit as soon as it is installed.”

His comments hint at a growing euroscepticism movement currently sweeping the continent in the wake of Britain’s momentous decision to unshackle itself from the beleaguered bloc.

Front National (FN) leader Marine Le Pen has already promised to hold a referendum on France’s membership of Brussels if she takes power in May, which has steamrolled her popularity in opinion polls.

A supporter who attended the rally said: “We celebrate Assselineau.

“It would be nice for France to become Switzerland for the good of the world, that France become a democracy again.” Another young woman says: “The exit of Europe will enable us to be free and autonomous and to ally ourselves with others like Russia.”
