At least three people have been killed after tornadoes touched down across the upper Midwest and northern Arkansas on Tuesday.

Compact but strong storms known as supercells raked parts of the central US throughout the day, causing damage from Arkansas to Iowa and Illinois. Wind-whipped wildfires destroyed homes in Texas.

In Ottawa, Illinois, state Emergency Management Agency spokeswoman Patti Thompson said a tornado victim was killed by an uprooted tree. Elsewhere in Illinois, a 71-year-old man was killed in Ottawa. His wife was also injured.

Minor injuries were also reported at an Ottawa nursing home, but Thompson said the number of those hurt in the twisters was not known.

The wild, spring-like storm system is expected to pose a risk to a staggering 45 million people in the coming days.

Weather experts warned another round of the ‘deadly severe’ storms will hit again in a similar region on Wednesday, before heading up towards the coast.

‘The storms can be strong enough to cause a few tornadoes, powerful wind gusts and flash flooding in the Ohio, Tennessee and lower Mississippi valleys Wednesday,’ AccuWeather Storm Warning Meteorologist Alex Avalos said.

The weather site listed the cities at the greatest risk early on Wednesday as: Cincinnati; Louisville and Lexington, Kentucky; Nashville, Tennessee; Huntsville, Alabama; and Tupelo, Mississippi.

Then as we move into Wednesday night, people as far away as Philadelphia are being told to brace for impact, with the entire I-95 corridor potentially in the firing line.
