Adrian Brown, also known as Adrian McKenzie, is said to have carried out the attack in front of horrified passengers in southeast London on Monday.
The 38-year-old boarded the train and threatened a passenger while brandishing a knife, Westminster Magistrates’ Court was told.
Brown then attacked Muhammed Askar Ali, knifing him in the head and in the body causing a punctured lung, it was said.
During the attack he shouted “I am going to get all the Muslims”, the court heard.
Brown was eventually restrained by heroic passengers who intervened and he was later arrested at Forest Hill station.
Mr Ali, who is in his 40s, suffered a punctured lung and abdomen, as well as a head injury, and was taken to hospital.
