Experts believe bird flu “has already spread to the entire country” after two tufted ducks were discovered to have the illness during the weekend.

The aggressive strain of flu, known as H5N8, was found in Copenhagen’s Christiania district and the other on the island of Møn.

Danish Food and Veterinary Service agent Stig Mellergaard said: “We are quite certain that the bird flu has already spread to the entire country. It is likely only a question of time until we receive reports from the rest of the country.

“This is very, very serious.”

In response, the government has ordered anybody keeping birds to ensure they remain inside for the forseeable future.

Denmark is the latest EU country to succumb to the virus, with Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Hungary, Poland, Holland and Croatia recently reporting cases amid fears bird flu is sweeping across the continent.

Last week, Denmark destroyed 250,000 infected eggs imported from Germany.
