On Sunday 18 Indian soldiers were killed in the disputed Kashmir region in the deadliest attack on security forces there for more than a decade.

The dawn attack by four gunmen prompted the Indian government to promise fierce retribution with a threat to execute more than the number of soldiers it had lost to restore honour to its armed forces.

Indian troops then killed eight people they said were trying to cross the border, which has been a flashpoint in the region for decades as both nations have differing claims over where the frontier lies.

Despite Islamabad’s strong denial of any involvement in Sunday’s attack, India’s politicians have lined up to apportion blame to Pakistan.

Federal Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad also said there was growing outrage about the attack in the border town of Uri, warning that patience with Pakistan was wearing thin.

Indian Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday tweeted that “Pakistan is a terrorist state”.
