Noted U.S. senator from Texas and potential 2016 GOP presidential contender Ted Cruz has accused the Obama Administration of ignoring the law while engaged in “counterfeiting immigration documents” under the president’s controversial executive amnesty order.
In a recent interview on Fox News, Cruz was addressing Obama’s action — which he took in the weeks following the 2014 midterm elections in November — on the heels of a ruling by a federal judge in Texas ordering a temporary halt to President Obama’s executive action.
U.S. District Judge Andrew Hanen, appointed to the federal bench by President George W. Bush, issued his order Feb. 16. It puts on hold Obama’s action to prevent up to 5 million people residing illegally in the country from being deported.
In his interview, Cruz said Obama’s administration was ignoring the law and the judge’s order.
“One of the things it points out is the president has claimed, rather absurdly, that the basis of his authority is ‘prosecutorial discretion.’ That he’s simply choosing not to prosecute 4.5 million people here illegally,” Cruz told Fox News, as quoted by The Associated Press. “But what the district court concluded, quite rightly, is they’re doing far more than that. The administration is printing work authorizations. It is affirmatively acting in contravention of federal law. Basically, what its doing is counterfeiting immigration documents, because the work authorizations its printing are directly contrary to the text of federal law. It is dangerous when the president ignores federal law.”
