The above May 5 APHIS list adds 8 farm outbreaks confirmed on May 4 (see H5N2 map). The new format on the APIS page keeps a running total of the number of afected birds, which was at 23,981,473. Hoverever, totals for many of the recent farms have not been entered.

Moreover, Minnesota and Iowa have been reporting H5 confirmed outbreaks prior to H5N2 conirmation, which indicates the above list will soon have large chicken outbreaks including 2,800,000 in Wright County, Iowa and 1,102,900 chickens in Nicollet County, Minnesota, pushing the toward 30 million.

When the H5 is confirmed in Ames, Iowa other contries are notified, which leads to poultry bans. Thus, the May 1 confirmations above have led to bans in three counties in Iowa (Clay, Kossuth, and Pochahontas), while confirmations on May 4 have led to bans in three additional counties in Iowa (Cherokee, Madison, and Wright), as well as a new county in Minnesota (Renville), which corresponded to previously announced outbreaks.

However, poultry has also been banned in Lewis County, Missouri, and the Missouri agriculture website cites a May 3 in a state that has not reported poultry cases since March 10.
