The above April 11 APHIS list cites the reported farm H5N2 outbreaks since March 4. There are two new farms, which increases the total H5N2 confirmed turkey farms to 10 for the past 4 days.

These cases are clustered on both sides of western border of Minnesota (see H5N2 map), the dividing line between the Central and Mississippi Flyways, which is more of an administrative than biological division. The current wave began with a confirmation on March 27, and 18 of the 19 confirmations were In Minnesota (13), South Dakota (4), or North Dakota (1). All 18 were commercial turkey farms and involved over 1 million turkeys.

Turkeys have a higher susceptibility to Fujian H5 than other poultry, and the combination of concentrated turkey farms and migrating waterfowl has taken its toll. The two Minnesota counties with the largest number of turkey farms are Kandiyohi, which has had 3 outbreaks, and Stearns, which has had 4 outbreaks. All other counties have had a single confirmed farm, which discounts farm to farm transmission (because of strong biosecurity, which has also limited barn to barn transer)..

The recently reported confirmation of Fujian clade 2.3.4.4 H5 in a lesser snow goose in northwestern Missouri corresponded in time and space with the earlier outbreaks in Arkansas, Missouri, and Kansas may have been a precursor for the outbreaks in the region to the north.
