A deadly strain of the bird flu virus was detected Friday at a North Dakota turkey farm and at four more in Minnesota bringing the number of affected farms across the Midwest to 20 since an outbreak was confirmed in March.
The new cases of highly-contagious H5N2 raise the infected bird toll to 1.1 million since the outbreak began.
According to the US Department of Agriculture, the virus was detected in birds raised at farms in Minnesota’s Cottonwood, Lyon, Watonwan and Stearns counties. These barns housed a total of 189,000 turkeys.
In North Dakota’s Dickey County, the strain affected a flock of 40,000 turkeys, according to State Veterinarian Susan Keller.
