Blizzards and ‘treacherous’ ice have caused carnage on the roads today as vehicles skidded off roads and were left abandoned in the snow.
More than 100,000 homes in Britain suffered power cuts as heavy snow and strong winds of up to 65mph wreaked havoc on electricity cables.
Tonight is expected to be the coldest evening of the year so far with temperatures dipping as low as -10C according to the Met Office, sparking fears that the conditions could claim scores of lives.
Hundreds of motorists were left stranded on the roads last night as up to five inches of snow fell in some areas, including Leek, near the Peak District in Staffordshire.
Lincolnshire Police alone dealt with 35 incidents involving crashes caused by the snow in the 12 hours between 8pm on Friday night and 8am Saturday morning.
