Fast Food Strikers Link Minimum Wage Effort to Eric Garner

Socialist union hitches its wagon to Brown and Garner protests

Protests against police violence and the death of Eric Garner and a nationwide effort to jack up the minimum wage are closely linked, according to activists.

“As fast food workers, we feel really upset about the [Eric Garner] decision,” Stanel Walker, a worker at Papa John’s Pizza in Brooklyn, told MSNBC. “This is our way of showing the world how we feel at this time. We want to fight the powers that be so we can be.”

Walker did not elaborate how the minimum wage and police violence are linked.

MSNBC, however, ventured an explanation:

Many low-wage workers saw a connection between their protest Thursday and the ones that have covered the streets of Ferguson and Staten Island in the past week. As [Kendall Fells, organizing director for Fast Food Forward] put it, they’re all “fights against injustice in the U.S.”
