ROSEMOUNT, Minn. – The head of Minnesota’s 34th Red Bull infantry division says protecting the safety and health of his soldiers is his top priority as they prepare to deploy for an Ebola mission in West Africa.

Nearly 700 members of the Minnesota National Guard will go to Liberia in April after receiving training.

Maj. Gen. Neal Loidolt says the Guard members won’t be treating Ebola patients. The unit, known as the Red Bulls, are expected to help support operations in the area.

Soldiers at a news conference organized by the Guard on Monday said they’re looking forward to the mission.

Maj. Darrin Janisch of Savage has deployed many times, but says this one is different because it’s a humanitarian mission. Janisch says there’s a sense of pride in helping other human beings.
