While lawmakers in Washington, D.C., debated a $659 million border bill on Thursday, officials at the
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced that as of Friday a detention facility in Karnes City, Texas, will be ready to take in adults with children who are part of the ongoing tsunami of illegal aliens who entered the United States.
With the blessing of President Barack Obama, the Karnes County Residential Center, which has been modified specifically for the current crisis, is just one of several housing projects the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is considering to detain adults with children who are continuing to illegally crossing the Southwest border.
While the DHS claims these facilities will lead to more timely and effective deportations, as well as helping to deter others from illegally crossing into Texas, several local police and sheriffs believe there will be few who will actually be returned to their home countries in Central America.
