The flu is becoming a serious problem in the state of Illinois. It’s spreading rapidly and hitting more and more people each day. Health officials are urging people who have not yet gotten a flu shot, to get one now.
So far in Illinois, six people have died from the flu and more than 120 have landed themselves in the intensive care unit.
The Illinois Department of Public Health expects to see both numbers increase even more unless people start taking measures to protect themselves.
“Illinois is now widespread with influenza activity,” said Jim Stone of the Sangamon County Department of Public Health.
Stone says most of the flu cases officials are seeing are H1N1.
Symptoms of this flu strain include fever, body aches and a sore throat, which is taking a toll on people who are infected, like Wesley Coady of Springfield. “Horrible. Felt like I wanted to die. The chills, headache, and stomach and everything . It was bad,” Coady said.
Stone says if you haven’t gotten a flu shot yet, you need to. It’s not too late.

“It’s a good way to protect yourself. Its 70 to 80 percent efficacy as far as getting the vaccine. It’s a great way to diminish the severity of the flu if indeed you happen to get it,” Stone said.

The sooner you get the flu shot, the quicker it will start protecting you.

“It takes about two weeks for the vaccine to become viable in your system, but then it ramps up and starts to provide even more protection,” Stone said.
We caught up with Springfield resident Diana Wade, who says she always makes sure she and her family are vaccinated.
